The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) is pleased to announce the 2005 Pacific Islands News Association Awards for media excellence.
Because of the limited amount of sponsorship available, awards will be given out in the following areas:
- TVNZ/PINA Pacific Television Journalist of the Year.
- ABC Asia Pacific/PINA Young Pacific Television Journalist of the Year.
- Radio New Zealand International/PINA Young Radio Journalist of the Year.
- Radio Australia/PINA Radio Journalist of the Year
These awards and a host of other media related recognition awards will be presented at the PINA Convention in the Kingdom of Tonga in November.

Nominations for more than one category will be accepted.
1. ABC Asia Pacific/PINA YOUNG Pacific Television Journalist of the Year.
Nominations are invited from PINA members for the above category. The Judging Panel will be using the following guidelines to determine the winner.
- Strong journalism skills particularly focusing on investigative techniques.
- Strong use of production techniques with special focus on editing and sound.
- If an issue is involved, Judges will be looking for follow-ups with emphasis on how a particular issue panned out on television.
- Emphasis on teamwork and leadership skills.
Entrants are to comply with the following guidelines:
- Minimum of 6 stories which were broadcast on television between September 1 2004 and October 31, 2005.
- Applicants must have less than 3 years experience. (A letter from your organization confirming your employment details is required)
- Each story will require introductions (that were broadcast) as well as a brief write-up on the particular issue for the Judging Panel.
- All stories are to be provided on DVD as the preferred media. (Those not able to are to inform the PINA Secretariat)
Prize: One (1) return ticket to Australia for winner to work on attachment at a selected ABC TV Newsroom or broadcast centre. Prize includes accommodation and living allowances.
2. Television New Zealand/PINA Pacific Television Journalist of the Year.
Nominations are invited from PINA members for the above category. The Judging Panel will be using the following guidelines to determine the winner.
- Strong journalism skills particularly focusing on investigative techniques.
- Strong use of production techniques with special focus on editing and sound.
- If an issue is involved, Judges will be looking for follow-ups with emphasis on how a particular issue panned out on television.
- The effective use of resources or a creative way of assembling the story.
- Creative writing skills.
Entrants are to comply with the following guidelines:
- Minimum of 6 stories which were broadcast on television between September 1 2004 and October 31, 2005.
- Each story will require introductions (that were broadcast) as well as a brief write-up on the particular issue for the Judging Panel.
- All stories are to be provided on DVD as the preferred media. (Those not able to are to inform the PINA Secretariat)
Prize: One (1) return ticket to New Zealand for winner to work on attachment at a selected TVNZ Newsroom. Prize includes accommodation and living allowances.
3. Radio New Zealand International/PINA Young Pacific Radio Journalist of the Year.
Nominations are invited from PINA members for the above category. The Judging Panel will be using the following guidelines to determine the winner.
- Effective use of sound with emphasis on the creative aspects of a radio news story.
- Writing skills.
Applicants are to provide the following:
- A sample of their work. Minimum 6 stories required with introductions.
- A brief write-up on the issue or story. (under 200 words)
- Statement from the applicant about their role in their newsroom and their ambitions.
- A 400 word essay on what the applicant thinks about the importance of radio in their home country.
Prize: Two (2) week attachment with Radio New Zealand. All expenses paid.
4. Radio Australia/PINA Pacific Radio Journalist of the Year
Entrants to submit an audio sample of one of the following:
- Good Governance in the Pacific
- Land Tenure: Traditional versus Modern
- Chiefly versus Democratic rights
- Women's Role in a modern Pacific society
The entries may be either:
- interview format
- monologue format
- package format
And be no longer than 3 and half minutes in duration
Prize: Two (2) week attachment with Radio Australia. All expenses paid.
